Year 3/4 - Discovering Ancient Wonders and Exploring Our World!

Welcome back to an exciting year of learning in Year 3/4! We have a jam-packed term full of fascinating topics that will take us on adventures through history, across continents, and into the amazing world around us. Get ready to explore!

Our Learning This Term:

English:

We'll be diving deep into the captivating story of 'The Story of Tutankhamun'. Through this engaging book, we will develop our reading comprehension skills and learn about the life and times of this famous pharaoh. Our writing will focus on two exciting outcomes:

  • Diary Entry: Imagine you are an archaeologist discovering Tutankhamun's tomb! What would you see, feel, and write about?
  • Biography: We will research and write biographies about key figures from the story, learning how to present factual information in an engaging way.

Our Guided Reading sessions will take us on a journey through 'Africa: Amazing Africa' and explore ancient societies with 'The Humans’ Ancient Civilisations by Jonny Marx'. These texts will broaden our understanding of different cultures and times.

Geography: Get ready to follow the flow of the mighty River Nile! In our geography unit, we will be learning all about this vital river, its geographical features, its importance to the people who live along its banks, and its historical significance, particularly in relation to our history topic.

History: Prepare to step back in time to Ancient Egypt! We will become historians, uncovering the mysteries of the pharaohs, pyramids, gods and goddesses, and daily life in this incredible ancient civilization. This unit will link brilliantly with our English book and our geography study of the River Nile.

Science: We have two exciting science units this term:

  • Health and Movement: We will be exploring how our bodies work, focusing on food and nutrition to understand how to stay healthy and the important role of our skeleton in movement and support.
  • Light: Tombs, Torches and Timekeeper: Get ready to shine a light on the science of light! We will investigate how light travels, how we see, and explore different sources of light, linking it to our history topic with the idea of exploring ancient tombs.

Art (Summer Term 1): In the first half of the summer term, we will be getting creative with Craft and Design, focusing on Ancient Egyptian scrolls. We will learn about the materials and techniques used to create these historical documents and design our own impressive scrolls.

Design Technology (Summer Term 2): In the second half of the term, our Design Technology unit will be all about Food: Adapting a recipe. We will learn about different recipes and then put our creative hats on to adapt them, considering healthy eating and different tastes. Keep an eye out for some delicious outcomes!

Physical Education (PE): Get ready to get active! This term, we will be developing our skills in a range of sports including athletics, rounders, tennis, and cricket. We are very lucky to have a specialist coach who will be leading some of our sessions, helping us to improve our techniques and teamwork.

Please note: PE days are now Monday and Wednesday.

Religious Education (RE): Our RE learning this term will explore some big questions:

  • Term 1: We will be thinking deeply about "What does it mean to live a good life?" exploring different perspectives and values.
  • Term 2: We will continue our study of Christianity with our final unit on Salvation.

French: Our French learning this term will focus on the topic of 'En Classe' (In the Classroom). We will be learning key vocabulary and phrases to help us communicate in French within a classroom setting.
